Improved self-service with credit card payments launched in Carmarthen

Following a successful trial last term, the LRC is pleased to announce the launch of our new self-service system at Carmarthen Campus. Our new system is now available on both self-service terminals will allow you to borrow and return more than seven items in one transaction, and pay charges using a credit or debit card without coming to the Information Point to provide a faster more convenient service. As with our previous system, a receipt is also provided with every transaction which includes the due date or return date of any resources borrowed. Please do give it a try the next time you call in!

Carmarthen Campus: From Thursday 8^th December, most items you borrow from Carmarthen Campus Library will be issued until Wednesday 11^th January 2012.
Lampeter Campus: From Saturday 10 December, most items you borrow from the Library will be issued until Friday 13 January 2012.
Postgraduates and Staff: The usual 8 week loan applies to all no band (ordinary loan) items throughout the vacation.

Library System Upgrade - Carmarthen Campus

HIP, the Carmarthen Campus LRC catalogue, will be unavailable from Monday 28th to Wednesday 30th November inclusive due to an upgrade. All resources which would normally be due back between these dates will be due on Thursday 1st December.

This upgrade will also affect services on Carmarthen Campus. Between 28th and 30th November, self-service will be unavailable and we will be unable to directly renew any resources on your account. The LRC will be open as normal, and if you call in at the Library we can make a note of your details and renew your resources once the work is complete on Thursday 1st December.

WorldCat will still be available to search but please be aware details of holdings for Carmarthen Campus may be intermittent or unavailable during this period. Services at Lampeter using the Voyager system will not be affected.

Wedi’u casglu dros y 200 mlynedd ddiwethaf, drwy gymynrodd a rhoddion yn bennaf, mae LlARB yn cynnwys mwy na 35,000 o weithiau argraffedig, 8 llawysgrif o’r Oesoedd Canol, tua 100 o lawysgrifau o’r cyfnod wedi’r Oesoedd Canol a 69 o lyfrau a argraffwyd cyn 1501. Mae deunyddiau’r Archifau yn cynnwys cofrestrau cynnar y myfyrwyr a ffotograffau o ganol y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg ymlaen.

Gift Ideas

The Roderic Bowen Library & Archives (RBLA) houses the Special Collections of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Acquired over the last 200 years, largely by bequest and donation, the RBLA includes over 35,000 printed works, 8 medieval manuscripts, around 100 post medieval manuscripts, and 69 books printed before 1501. Material from the Archives includes the early student registers and photographs from the mid nineteenth century onwards.

A range of gifts and souvenirs inspired by the books and manuscripts is being developed, and this Christmas we are offering a selection of Christmas cards and Calendars which are now available for you to buy from the University Shop (Carmarthen Campus) and the Library (Lampeter Campus).

Yellow Bands - new trial loan policy at Carmarthen

Following customer feedback, we will be changing our policy for yellow band (one day) loans on books at Carmarthen Campus as a trial until the end of term on 16th December. We will now be allowing up to 2 consecutive renewals on yellow band books, which can be made online or over the telephone. After 2 renewals, yellow band books must be returned to the desk and cannot be re-issued to the same borrower to ensure others have access. The trial is intended to improve the service both to customers who have had difficulty returning a yellow band after one day, and also those who have experienced difficulty in accessing yellow bands because they have been re-issued multiple times to the same borrower.

Grove Art Online covers all aspects of the visual arts from prehistory to the present day, from art and architecture to ceramics and photography. It gives online access to the text of over 50,000 articles from the 34 volume Dictionary of Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms, and the Oxford Companion to Western Art.

Also included are images from the most frequently studied works of art. Through partnerships with outstanding organizations such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bridgeman Art Library, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Art Resource, ARTstor, Art Images for College Teaching (AICT), and numerous international galleries and individual artists.

The Roderic Bowen Library and Archives

The books of the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives are, like the streets and buildings of Rome, historical artefacts, revealing to the curious layer upon layer of Western European life, from classical antiquity to the dawn of the modern age. This exhibition uses a small selection of these treasures to illustrate the history of five key sites at Rome: the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Trajan's Column, the Circus Maximus and the Pyramid of Cestius.

Following on from our successful trial for Education Research Complete (ERC) the LRC is please to announce that we will be subscribing from the 1^st August 2011.

This e-resource offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full-text education journals. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and additional learning needs.

Access to ERC will be through the e-resources page on the LRC website. University of Wales Trinity Saint David Athens Accounts will be required for off-campus access.

Birth of modern China in massive online archive

8,000 rare photographs of Chinese life in the early twentieth century have just launched online through the Visualising China project, a unique virtual archive giving researchers new opportunities to explore and interact with images of China taken between 1850-1950.

The archive includes rare shots of the nationalist leader of China Chiang Kai-Shek among photographs taken by the Chinese ambassador to the USSR during World War Two, Fu Bingchang.

Funded by JISC, the project is a collaboration between the Web Futures team at the University of Bristol’s Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT) and the Historical Photographs of China (HPC) team within the Department of Historical Studies.

BUFVC launches pioneering federated search environment

An innovative 'all-in-one' search engine allowing users to access nine online databases, containing more than 13 million records via a single entry point, has been launched today by the BUFVC and Royal Holloway, University of London.

The BUFVC federated search environment will allow users to easily view and filter collated results relating to film, television and radio content.

The search environment will replace the need for researchers to locate databases and collections through multiple channels and enable creative discovery of content.

Summer Loan Periods: Carmarthen Campus

GOMER PUBLISH MENNA ELFYN POETRY ANTHOLOGY

This week, Gomer will publish an important poetry anthology by Menna Elfyn, one of contemporary Wales’ most well-known poets. For the first time, this latest publication offers a comprehensive anthology of the work of a poet that has played a key role in the development of Welsh poetry over the last thirty-five years and more. The anthology, entitled Merch Perygl includes over 150 Welsh-language poems spanning the whole of the poet’s career thus far, from the early poems of the seventies including Mwyara and ‘Stafelloedd Aros, through the eighties and nineties to more recent collections such as the bilingual collection by Bloodaxe Perfect Blemish/Perffaith Nam and the latest collection by Gomer, Er Dy Fod, in 2007. Despite her worldwide success, and constant invitations to travel the world promoting new editions in foreign languages, Menna Elfyn, who is also director of the MA in Creative Writing in English and Welsh at the University of Wales Trinity Saintt David, is adamant that she is a Welsh poet first and foremost, and that’s why this book means so much to her.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. This month we are focussing on some of the suggestions we have received for Y Cwad.

"I think that the computer area should be for work and not to be used for social networking sites."
LRC computers are open access and while we accept that some students may be visiting social networking sites for personal use, we also recognise that many students may be using these tools to aid their study. Some students use social media to keep in contact with their tutors and fellow students or to participate in a group project, for example. It is often difficult to assess how computers are being used without invading students' individual privacy.

"More colour, e.g. pictures"
The LRC has recently introduced new signage and artwork in Y Cwad with the help of a professional signwriter, and is currently investigating the possibility of introducing artwork to the area.

"The noise level in the study / computer area is really distracting"
The main area of Y Cwad is designed to be a social learning space. We would recommend students try using the individual study places upstairs in the Library for quiet study, or one of the study rooms in Y Cwad. Although designed for group study, the study rooms can also be used for quiet study and can either be booked or used when not reserved by other students.

The Census is coming!

As Census.ac.uk , part of the ESRC's Census Programme, researchers can get a one-stop shop registration for aggregate statistics, microdata, interaction data, digitised boundary data and longitudinal datasets. The programme currently supports 1971 - 2001 data, but hopes to provide access to data from the 2011 Census once it has been released by the Government's statistical agencies.

The National Archives has published online for the first time the official papers of one of Britain's most iconic political figures. From today, the prime ministerial files of Margaret Thatcher's first year in power can be searched for free.
To coincide with the 20th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher's resignation from Number 10, over 100 records from The Prime Minister's Office (PREM files) have been newly digitised in a joint project by The National Archives and The Margaret Thatcher Foundation.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David differ somewhat in their respective approaches to the study of magic. Whereas Hogwarts provides an excellent, if at times hazardous, training in applied wizardry, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David offers the opportunity to develop a theoretical understanding of the intellectual and cultural history of magic.

This exhibition shows a small selection of books relevant to the study of Witchcraft and Wizardry that are kept in the historic collections at the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives, and that are available for consultation to all students at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

BICENTENARY OF NEUDDLWYD ACADEMY

The academy at Neuaddlwyd was opened in October 1810 as a result of the deliberations of the ministers of the Independent chapels in Cardiganshire. They needed a place to train young men from poorer backgrounds and prepare them for the ministry.

2010 will mark the bicentenary of the establishment of the academy which at the time was famous in Wales and well known throughout Britain, indeed its fame had reached America and its founder, Thomas Phillips, was awarded an Hon. Doctorate in Divinity by what is now Princetown University in 1831. It was significant in the ecclesiatic and educational history of Wales in the early 19th century and it is appropriate that its foundation should be celebrated. A celebration is being held in Aberaeron and Neuaddlwyd on 15-16 October.

The lives of 200,000 inmates held in horrific conditions on nineteenth-century prison ships were highlighted yesterday as the records were made available online.

The ships housed inmates aged eight to 84, according to the Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849.

William Davies, 84, got seven years for sheep stealing while Samuel Phillips, 16, got life for burglary

Each hulk held 200 to 300 convicts, with one in three dying on board.

Dan Jones, of Ancestry.co. uk, said: "The records provide a fascinating insight."

Britain's last floating jail, holding prisoners off Portland, Dorset, was sold in 2005.

Earlier this year David Cameron suggested reintroducing prison ships as quick and "cost effective"

Historic Book of Aneirin could move to National Library

A book containing one of the oldest Welsh poems ever written could be on the move.
The Llyfr Aneirin (Book of Aneirin) dates from 1265 and is currently on display at Cardiff's central library.
But in order to preserve the ancient manuscript long-term, plans in place to hand it over to the National Library in Aberystwyth.
The final decision rests with Cardiff council who will take a vote on 9 September.

Ten minutes of quality reading time with a child every day can make a real difference to children’s literacy levels was the message from Education Minister Leighton Andrews at the National Eisteddfod.

Speaking at the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government’s new literacy campaign, Take Five, Read for Ten, the Minister said:

“I want children to develop a love of reading. This new campaign encourages adults to take time out of their hectic lifestyles to spend ten minutes each day reading with a child."

The campaign forms a key part of the Assembly Government’s National Literacy Plan which will be launched in the autumn.

A leaflet on Take Five, Read for Ten is being made available throughout the summer to leisure centres across Wales and will be available to all primary schools in the autumn.

The leaflet contains some top tips on how to support children in their reading which include:

Read with your child every night.
Join a local library for free. You'll be amazed at what's on offer – story telling, fun events and books are free to borrow.
Follow the words with your finger as you read. Miss out words to check they are following and make them say it.
Visit your nearest bookshop or car boot sales for bargain books.
Reading isn’t just about books. It’s about football programmes, comics, recipes, rugby magazines, e-mails, computer games, text messages, digital story telling – they all have elements of reading

Digital voice helps blind people surf the web in Welsh

Automated speech software - which enables information on computer screens to be read aloud in Welsh - is being launched at the Eisteddfod, by Education Minister Leighton Andrews and Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones.

The Welsh Synthetic Voice has been produced by RNIB Cymru to help blind and partially sighted people access information on-line, such as train timetables.

The software will be free for individuals to download and is supported by £80,000 of Welsh Assembly Government funding.

Website looks for social histories of Wales

A website showcasing the social history of Wales is being unveiled at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

People's Collection Wales is a bilingual gathering of experiences, pictures and video of life in Wales.

Archive material from museums has been used, but the developers are now looking for contributions from the public.

The website uses GPS technology allowing the viewer to travel a map of Wales and view artefacts in 3D.

The site will be formally launched on the Eisteddfod field in Ebbw Vale by Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones.

University of Wales Trinity Saint David Receives Royal Approval

At the Privy Council meeting held at Buckingham Palace on the 21st July 2010, Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the Privy Council, approved an Order granting a Supplemental Charter to the University of Wales Lampeter, and directed the Lord Chancellor to apply the Great Seal to the Charter.

This Charter will lead to the establishment of a new University to serve the needs of Wales and the higher education sector in the UK. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David brings together the strengths of University of Wales Lampeter and Trinity University College Carmarthen. This is an historical event which brings together the two oldest academic institutions in Wales to create a radical new model of post-16 education in the region.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David will welcome its first students in September.

An unfinished poem by Wales’s most famous poet, Dylan Thomas, will stay in Wales.

The poem, Elegy, begins with the line; ‘An old tormented man three quarters blind’ and is part of a collection of work which has been bought by the National Library for the nation. The collection, by the poet who died in 1953, also includes an extensive word-list for Poem on His Birthday, first published in World Review in 1951, and a collection of very early poems, such as the important poem A Refusal to Mourn the Death by Fire of a Child in London (Jeff Towns Collection: Dylan Thomas Poetry and Prose Manuscripts).

An additional collection of manuscripts by, and relating to, the author Jan Morris, have also been acquired by the National Library. These include; typescripts of her novels, together with the publisher’s corrected typescript of her memoir Conundrum, together with correspondence, notebooks and printed material. The collection will be added to the Jan Morris Papers.

This interesting report, published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation asks the question - How much is needed to achieve a minimum acceptable standard of living in the United Kingdom today? A number of key points were revealed during the course of this study, including:

A single person in the UK needs to earn at least £14,400 a year before tax to afford an acceptable standard of living.

Since 2000 there has been a fall in living standards of over 10 per cent.

A computer and home internet connection are now considered essential for all non-pensioner households.
